• Question: Do you spend your money on new instruments for your investigations?

      No, I don’t usually spend my own money on funding the parts – that money comes from things like research councils and universities – experimental apparatus can be extremely expensive and I couldn’t afford it!

      I do sometimes buy things like a hard disk (for storing data), laptop etc, but I would probably have that even if I was not doing research.

      I’m the same as James.
      We have funding from the research councils (that comes from UK goverment originally) that is allocated to research scientists who have written a proposal and had it accepted. In the proposal they have to state how the money is going to be spent and it’s normal to budget a certain amount on equipment that we’ll need to carry out the experiments and analysis. So no, fortunately I never need to spend my own money.
