Not much. I know some science journalists, and I think they are generally doing a good job. It is important that the public knows about science. The media play a key role in that and we scientists should help them. Of course, there are always some sensationalist stories which may be complete rubbish but they are usually not written by real science journalists.
I think they usually have science degrees. At Imperial we have a one-year MSc course in Science Communication which you can do after a science undergraduate degree to learn proper journalism skills.

Do science journalists generally study science or journalism?
