Many elements exist in nature only in chemical compounds, and these you can extract from them with chemical reaction. To make a new element you need a nuclear reaction because each element has a different number of protons in its atomic nucleus. You can produce a nuclear reaction by bombarding atoms with highly energetic particles so that their nuclei split or merge or pieces of them are chipped off.
