It can take a long time. Sometimes when things go well, you can find out new things every day, although they may sometimes be small. However, often you spend weeks or months working on a problem before you make a breakthrough. One needs patience and perseverance in research.

A lot of the time you don’t even know when you’re going to find out something new, and even then it can be lots of small things add up incrementally to a new result.

For example, right now I am checking a particular aspect of an uncertainty on a result. I have a strong suspicion on what causes a good part of that uncertainty, but I am not yet totally sure.
