      I would be in favour of nuclear power, but I would want it to be strictly regulated and driven more by safety and environmental needs than by profits for the company.

      Modern reactors should be much safer than the old ones we currently use, so it seems to me that the absolute worst option is to extend the life of the old reactors rather than build new ones.

      We should put more resources than we do into research into new reactor types, too. Thorium could be used, either in conjunction with existing reactors, or with completely new designs. It is not possible to build a nuclear bomb with thorium (unlike uranium or plutonium) and there is quite a large amount of it available on Earth.

      I do not like the idea of burying nuclear waste deep underground though. I think we should look to transmuting the waste into less harmful isotopes using particle beams.

      Sometimes I think there is too much of a divide between the political classes and scientists.
