      Possibly. The scientific method has to involve doing experiments in order to test a hypothesis. Galileo was certainly one of the first people to do that when he tested the assumptions about the rate at which objects fall and decelerate during motion. I am not sure if Galileo was the only person thinking along these lines though – maybe he is just better publicised that other people.
